Turkmenistan is one of the most “restricted” countries
of the world.
This country is a member of the United Nations and OSCE.
It has joined the majority of the international conventions
and charters, pledged to observe the human rights and
to grant civil and political freedom to its citizens.
Turkmenistan has the National Institute of Democracy
and Human Rights under the country’s president. Even
the Union of the Journalists of Turkmenistan is called
“Democratic”, although there are no private and independent
newspapers, broadcasting organizations and radio stations
in the country.
Our project is a chance to tell what is going on in
this country with the press, journalists, with those
who tried and still try to become free. Free not only
according to the 26th article of the Constitution, but
also free actually.
The project is implemented by the Center for Journalism
in Extreme Situations of Russia’s Union of Journalists,
and by everyone, who hopes that free, independent and
democratic press will appear in Turkmenistan. |
